London to Georgian Frome
Martha and Paul Oster
DESIGN BRIEF, PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS
Martha and Paul fell in love at first sight with their 1790 Georgian house and moved from London with their young family. I live locally and they kindly invited me over to discuss their brief. The house had been renovated for modern living and its attractive, harmonious architectural features, arched pillars in the hall, original shutters, mouldings and tiles were beautifully preserved.
The Georgians, especially during the Regency period weren't afraid of bold colour palettes and our blank canvas meant we could go daring and colourful or simple and light. Martha loves collecting vintage and electic so our final brief was to go contemporary and modern, with a nod to the Georgian period creating an individual and unique mix of styles seen to good effect in the large Library room designed as an sociable adult space.

Martha and Paul wanted to transform the old dining room into a Family room for watching TV and dayroom space for the children to play. This had to feel playful, casual and relaxed, so comfy floor cushions are perfect for this and added to the Boho vibe.
Paint colours were a warm combination of Neptune Paprika toned with Neptune Driftwood as a backdrop for natural materials, light wood and plants to create a cosy inviting space for the family to relax and play together. Martha's vintage Haberdashery cupboard works well in the niche at the back of the room balanced with a playful chalk board in the other niche.
Balancing contemporary and period style by drawing on different cultural and historical styles is loosely described as "eclectic" but can be a challenge. Finding the right space for eclectic items is the difference between a successful scheme or looking cluttered. Mixing traditional antiques, contemporary pieces and unique finds for balance and interest is dependent on where each item is placed in the space and the relationship between each piece.
Martha's spacious white arched pillar hallway gets a modern look with Little Greene Basalt, a dramatic contemporary blue black below the dado rail. A perfect space to display vintage posters and pictures, 1930s style lamps, mirrors, old wooden toys. The light and airy feel from the high ceilings is a great backdrop to show off Martha's unique treasures.

Martha's review
"Working with Annie and her team was a real pleasure and we are so pleased with the results. She listened carefully to our particular tastes, but also helped us to understand what would and wouldn’t work in our Georgian home. She is knowledgable about the history of different spaces and which styles will lend themselves to these. We had several revisions which ensured that each space really delivered what it was that we were looking for. Including rooms that were dual purpose because of our young family. I would recommend Annie and look forward to working with her again in the future (we still have the upstairs to do!). "
